WHAT DROVE THE MARKET

1. Crude Oil: Oil prices moved sharply higher amid renewed U.S.-Iran tensions and concerns around energy supply. For India, a major crude importer, sustained oil-price pressure can increase inflation and external-balance risks.

2. Global Rate Concerns: Higher U.S. bond yields and expectations around the Federal Reserve's rate path weighed on global risk appetite.

3. MSCI Rebalancing: MSCI's quarterly reshuffle created unusually large stock-specific flows during the closing auction. The changes included additions of Laurus Labs, Lenskart, Adani Energy Solutions and Groww, while Balkrishna Industries, SBI Cards and Astral were removed.

4. Global Cues: Weak international sentiment and geopolitical uncertainty added to the cautious tone in Indian equities.

The MSCI changes were implemented after the August 31 close, with the new index composition effective from September 1. Reuters reported that the rebalancing generated substantial activity during the closing auction.

CLOSING AUCTION WATCH

The MSCI reshuffle coincided with India's newly introduced closing-auction mechanism for eligible futures-and-options stocks. Reuters reported that around $4.1 billion worth of trades took place on the NSE during the closing auction window, nearly 40 times the average turnover recorded since the system was introduced earlier in August.

TUESDAY'S MARKET WATCH — SEPTEMBER 1

The 24,000 level remains an important psychological reference for the Nifty after Monday's close at 24,080.40. Traders are likely to track crude oil prices, U.S.-Iran developments, global bond yields and the impact of the MSCI changes as they become effective from September 1.

AUGUST MARKET PERFORMANCE

Reuters reported that the Nifty 50 ended August approximately 1.2% lower, while the Sensex declined about 1.5%. Monday's decline therefore capped a difficult month for India's headline large-cap benchmarks.

MARKET TAKEAWAY

Monday's session highlighted a market split between weak headline indices and relative strength in banking stocks. Crude oil, geopolitical risk, global rate expectations and MSCI-related flows remain the key variables heading into September. The Nifty's ability to hold the 24,000 zone and the behaviour of oil prices will be closely watched in the next session.
